Neighborhood Watch Plans

The City Council will discuss the feasibility of a Neighborhood Watch program during budget sessions in June, City Manager Claude Booker said.

Booker submitted a report to the council Tuesday with a recommendation to hire a full-time coordinator to run and schedule programs for residents. Booker proposed an annual budget of $51,200.

He said the city has been trying to get a Neighborhood Watch program off the ground for 10 months. Although there was a citizens’ “watchdog” organization seven years ago, the city has never had a Neighborhood Watch unit, Booker said. Ten months ago, Councilman Robert Cunningham was placed in charge of starting the program but he resigned earlier this month, saying he was accused of making it a political issue.
