Smoky Brewery Blaze Causes $2,000 Damage

Firefighters fought a smoky blaze at the Anheuser-Busch Inc. brewery in Van Nuys for nearly an hour Wednesday night, but the fire caused little damage and no one was injured, authorities said.

Eight engine companies from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the fire, which started about 8:30 p.m. in the basement of the brewery in the 8200 block of North Woodley Avenue, department spokesman Jim Wells said.

The fire, which was put out at 9:22 p.m., was confined to a wall and to insulation around ducting near an abandoned boiler, Wells said. The fire was caused by misuse of a cutting torch, and damage was estimated at $2,000, Wells said.

The thick smoke made it difficult for firefighters to find the source of the fire and remove insulation to reach the flames, Wells said.

No beer was contaminated, Wells said.
