In a sweep of Grape Street Park Wednesday, San Diego firefighters found another suspected pipe bomb, bringing the total number of suspected bombs found in the area to 15 in the last three days.
Like the majority of the other suspected pipe bombs, the 3-by-16-inch device found Wednesday was not filled with explosives, said Larry Carlson, a captain with the Metro Arson Strike Team.
If the bomb had been filled with explosives, it would have been powerful enough to blow up half of a city bus and send shrapnel for several blocks, Carlson said.
Carlson said that, although there are no suspects, the incidents are definitely related because of the similar construction and location of the devices.
The arson team began its search for pipe bombs Monday after a hiker found a suspected pipe bomb in the park at 2800 Grape St.
Because of the thoroughness of Wednesday’s sweep, Carlson said he is uncertain if the search will continue.
Pieces of the devices were sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in San Francisco for investigation.
