Several Southern California religious leaders joined in denouncing a plan to evict illegal aliens from federally subsidized housing. Los Angeles Roman Catholic Archbishop Roger M. Mahony, called the plan--which goes into effect on July 30--an “evil edict” during an ecumenical prayer service organized by the United Neighborhoods Organization at the Aliso Village public housing project in Boyle Heights. “In the church, there are no illegal aliens,” Mahony said in Spanish to a gathering of 200 people. “There are no undocumented.” Others at the service were Bishop Oliver Garver of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, Dr. Fran Burnford of the American Lutheran Church and Rabbi Alfred Wolf of the Wilshire Boulevard Temple.
