Peter Weber, mayor of Rolling Hills Estates, has been named general chairman for the ninth Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce/Tracy Austin Tennis Tournament. The tournament begins September 27 at Ernie Howlett Courts in Rolling Hills Estates.

Three sixth-grade students have won the “Good Posture Poster Contest” sponsored by the Los Angeles Southwest Chiropractic Assn. Point Fermin Elementary School students Alice Lo and Teresa Gonzales and Cabrillo Avenue Elementary School student Bunnaro Sun will receive $50 each for their creative efforts. They are now in the running for a $600 prize offered by the American Chiropractic Assn. in a national poster competition.

Gardena’s “Outstanding Senior Citizen,” chosen last April by the city and the El Camino Kiwanis Club, has been honored again, this time by the city of Los Angeles. Dallas Oylear took part in the 21st Older Americans Recognition Day ceremonies May 31 at the County Hall of Administration.

Hermosa Beach Chief of Police Frank J. Beeson was among 20 new graduates of the California Law Enforcement Command College. Beeson, who is leaving his post June 30, has been chief since April, 1981. He completed 326 classroom hours required by the program, the first of its kind in the nation.

Jack Rankin, deputy superintendent of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District since 1979, will leave that post at the end of June to become superintendent of Covina Valley Unified School District.

At the Lawndale Chamber of Commerce installation dinner next month, Laura Calderwood will turn the presidency over to Roy Allen, owner of Freeway Motors. The theme for Allen’s tenure is “Business to Business.”

California State University, Dominguez Hills, medical technology student Chi-kwong Or scored the highest in the nation on the latest Board of Registry test, according to the university. Or, a native of Hong Kong, scored 98% on the nationally administered test which certifies medical technologists.

Six eighth-graders at Calle Mayor Middle School have been been recognized with Presidential Academic Fitness Awards. Tina Chang, Scott Davies, Jae Kim, Robert Peitzman, Dirk Pranke and Brent Takao won the awards by maintaining a 3.5 grade-point average for the last three years and scoring above the 80th percentile on the California Test of Basic Skills.

Wayne Kiyokane has been given the Outstanding Math Resource Teacher Award by the state Department of Education. Kiyokane, who has designed a math teaching program for other instructors to use, ensuring consistent instruction, has taught in the Inglewood School District for 13 years and currently teaches at Bennett Elementary School.
