Quake Destroys Homes in Eastern Venezuela

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook northern South America on Wednesday, destroying homes in eastern Venezuela and sending vibrations from Bogota, Colombia, to Port of Spain in Trinidad, officials said.

The Seismic Research Institute of the University of the West Indies reported that the quake’s epicenter was 16.5 miles west of Port of Spain, in the Gulf of Paria, between Venezuela and Trinidad. No damage or injuries were reported in Port of Spain.

Officials said several homes in the eastern Venezuela town of Carupano were destroyed, and there were unconfirmed reports that houses were damaged and people evacuated in the eastern state of Sucre.
