An intended target of a bombing escaped uninjured when a pipe bomb malfunctioned Friday afternoon, police said.

A police spokesman said a box was left on the front porch of a home in the 1600 block of Maple Drive, along with a note saying it was intended for Edward Maxey, said by police to be a self-employed truck driver.

He opened the box when he got home and saw what appeared to be a bomb, police said. Sheriff’s deputies said the bomb appeared genuine and was intended to explode when the box was opened, but didn’t. It was removed and destroyed by the sheriff’s bomb squad.
