Pacific Coast Builders Conference Slated
The annual pilgrimage of home builders, developers, architects and contractors from 14 western states is headed for San Francisco for the opening Wednesday of the 28th annual Pacific Coast Builders Conference.
About 5,000 persons involved in home and light commercial construction are expected to attend the nation’s largest regional builders’ meeting for four days at the Moscone Convention Center.
Nine industry leaders, one posthumously, will be honored by the California Building Industry Foundation with induction into its Hall of Fame in recognition of their efforts and activities in the industry, at a gala $150-ticket dinner Wednesday at the St. Francis Hotel.
In addition to its scheduled 30 educational sessions and 125 industry experts and speakers, the conference will feature industry products displayed in more than 54,000 square feet of space at the convention center, including a 3,000-square foot Smart House exhibit demonstrating “a new era in home comfort, convenience, enjoyment and safety,” developed by the National Assn. of Home Builders Research Foundation.
Results of Insight ‘86, a statewide home consumer survey, will be announced Friday, and later that day the 23rd annual Gold Nugget Awards will be presented for excellence in architectural design and land use planning, co-sponsored by PCBC and Glendale-based Sun/Coast Architect/Builder magazine.
This year’s competition attracted a record 804 entries in 32 categories for residential, commercial, industrial and land use planning from 14 western states, according to Richard Hall, Orange builder, and program chairman.
Alvin Toffler, futurist author and social critic, will be the keynote speaker at a Thursday breakfast session. An expanded “Meet the Experts” program, headed by Arthur Danielian, Newport Beach architect, is planned for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, providing for consultation in all phases of the housing industry.
The Hall of Fame honorees are David M. Bohannon, San Jose; John A. Bristow and James P. Lewis of Sacramento; Merrill Butler, Irvine; Richard C. Chenoweth, Los Angeles; Kim Fletcher and Stanley Scott of San Diego; Kenneth H. Hofmann, Concord and the late Floyd Cerini, Los Angeles.
Proceeds from the dinner will support the foundation’s college scholarships for those making a career in the building industry.
