Share

Frank L. Smith, a member of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, has been selected to head the planning effort for the Orange County centennial in 1989.

Smith said the 18-member group, which includes county, city and corporate officials, has been meeting monthly to plan for the 100-year anniversary, which will culminate in a celebration on Aug. 1, 1989.

A yearlong celebration is planned, including sports and cultural events and coordination of all the county’s regularly scheduled activities--such as the Strawberry Festival in Garden Grove and Toys on Parade in Santa Ana--to blend with the centennial theme.

Smith said a preliminary event will be held at the Bowers Museum next August to unveil some plans and the corporate backers of the celebration. He noted that corporate sponsorship proved very successful in the Olympics and that he hopes to put it to use again in 1989.
