A power outage caused when a garbage truck struck a guide wire at a busy San Carlos intersection blacked out nearly 3,600 homes for as long as two hours Wednesday afternoon.

The outage spread through two San Diego Gas & Electric Co. circuits near Golfcrest and Jackson drives after the wire was downed about 2:05 p.m., according to Stephannie Smith, an SDG&E; spokeswoman. Police said traffic in the area was clogged, as traffic signals were out for much of the afternoon.

Power to most of the affected homes was restored within 45 minutes, Smith said, but some homes did not have power until 4:15 p.m.
