Golf Roundup : Sutton, Fehr Lead Atlanta Shootout at 66

Hal Sutton and Rick Fehr each shot bogey-free rounds of six-under-par 66 Thursday to share the first-round lead in the $500,000 Georgia-Pacific Atlanta golf tournament.

More than half the field of 156 shot par or better on the 7,007-yard Atlanta Country Club course.

South African Denis Watson was tied at 67 with six other players--Larry Ziegler D.A. Weibring, Andrew Magee, Mark O’Meara, Willie Wood and Scott Hoch.

Ten others shot 68, including Bob Tway, a two-time winner this season, and Doug Tewell. Tom Kite and Larry Mize led a large group at 69, and U.S. Open champion Raymond Floyd and Andy Bean each shot a 70.

Laurie Rinker shot a three-under-par 69 to take a one-stroke lead over three players in the first round of the $255,000 Rochester International tournament at Pittsford, N.Y.

Rinker had five birdies and two bogeys on the 6,162-yard Locust Hill Country Club course.

Tied for second place at 70 were Marlene Floyd, who picked up where her brother Raymond left off last week (winning the U.S. Open); Patti Rizzo, and Hollis Stacy.

Robert Lee of Britain sank an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole to complete a round of six-under-par 66 and take a one-stroke lead over Australian Wayne Riley in the first-round of the $300,000 Irish Open at Portmarnock.

Deane Beman, the U.S. PGA Tour commissioner, launched his professional comeback with a 74. He bogeyed the first three holes. “I played good, solid golf from the ninth to the 17th,” said Beman, who had not played in a competitive tournament since 1973.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain forced cancellation of the first round of the $300,000 Senior Tournament Players Championship at Shaker Heights, Ohio.

Officials said the tournament would be reduced to 54 holes.
