A 52-year-old man was shot several times outside his home late Sunday after he went to investigate some breaking glass, the Sheriff’s Department reported Monday.

Sheriff’s Lt. Richard Olson said the man, although severely wounded, was able to return to his house, telephone deputies and tell them his former wife had done the shooting.

The ex-wife, identified as Caroline Clara Draper, 48, of Orange, was arrested at her home early Monday and booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, Olson said. Bail was set at $250,000.

The victim, Maurice Edward Draper was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was listed in critical condition after emergency surgery.

Deputies seized a small-caliber handgun at the woman’s house but are not yet able to say whether it was used in the attack, Olson said.

The attack occurred Sunday night as Maurice Draper was preparing for bed, Olson said. Draper heard some glass breaking outside, went to investigate, noticed his garage door was open and was shot as he went into the garage, Olson said.

The couple had been divorced about six years. Olson said investigators have not yet been able to determine a motive.
