Court OKs Delay in Snow Clearance

ST. PAUL, Minn. —
Businesses may wait a “reasonable time” after a snowstorm to shovel their sidewalks, the state Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday.
The ruling was made in a lawsuit filed by a woman who had slipped on an icy sidewalk at Northwestern College in Roseville on the second day of a three-day snowstorm in 1981.
A jury awarded Julie Ann Niemann, who suffered a herniated disc, $42,000. However, the appeals court said she should not receive damages because the college had not been negligent.
