S. Africa Postpones Schools’ Reopening; Death Toll Now at 61
The government today postponed for two weeks the scheduled reopening of black schools in an effort to curb unrest, and the death toll under the 2-week-old state of emergency rose to 61 with the killings of two more blacks.
The head of the Department of Education for blacks, Braam Fourie, said the reopening of black schools after midyear vacation will be postponed from next Monday until July 14.
He said the delay is to implement plans to ensure “calmness and discipline” but did not elaborate. Black schools have been a focus of strikes, boycotts and other anti-government protests.
In today’s unrest report, the government Bureau of Information said two blacks were killed by fellow blacks in the 24 hours that ended early today.
