San Diego Roundup : European Riders Continue Their Motocross Battle Saturday in Carlsbad

David Thorpe of England and Andre Malherbe of Belgium will carry their battle for supremacy of world motocross to Carlsbad Raceway Saturday for the seventh leg of the U.S. Grand Prix tour.

The two 45-minute motos will be the final 500cc world championship held at Carlsbad after 14 years of racing. Thorpe, the Grand Prix defending champion, leads Malherbe by 10 points.

David Bailey, who moved from San Diego to Axton, Va., a few years ago, is the defending champion at Carlsbad.

Gates will open at 8 a.m., time trials are scheduled for 9:30 and racing will begin at noon. Tickets, at $20 for grandstand reserved, $13 for general admission and $7 for children 12 and under, can be purchased at Ticketron and Teleseat.

The U.S. Pro Tour of Surfing will be at Harbor Beach in Oceanside Saturday and Sunday in the second annual $5,000 Aloe-Up Cup.

Brian McNulty, the 1986 tour leader, and John Parmenter, the defending Professional Surfing Assn. of America champion, headline 112 top professional and amateur surfers entered. Surfing is scheduled to start at 6:30 a.m. both days; the finals will start at 2 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 722-7583.

The first Morey Boogie Oceanside Classic also will be at Harbor Beach Saturday and Sunday.

Top international performer Ben Severson of Hawaii and 47 other bodyboarders will compete for the $500 first prize.

The Bud Light Ocean Iron Man Relays will be Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Silver Strand, across from the Coronado Hotel.

More than 60 athletes, including three-time Iron Man champion Mitch Kahn, will compete.

The Hollywood Kickers, tied for first place in the Western Soccer Alliance with San Jose at eight points, will play the San Diego Nomads Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Glenn Broderick Field, behind San Diego High School.

The Nomads, 1-3-2 and in fourth place, tied the F.C. Seattle Storm, 3-3, last week with three goals in the final six minutes.

Tickets are $2 for adults and $1 for children.

Radio station KLZZ (AM 600) will broadcast all 52 of the San Diego Sockers’ games next season, the most coverage in the team’s nine-year history.

KLZZ has broadcast the Sockers for three years.
