Ueberroth Rejects Tampering Charge

Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth has rejected a claim by the Blue Jays that the Atlanta Braves violated tampering rules in signing former Toronto Manager Bobby Cox last season.

In a letter to Atlanta board chairman Bill Bartholomay and Toronto vice president Pat Gillick, Ueberroth’s office ruled, after an investigation, that the Braves did not act improperly while making Cox their general manager.

The Blue Jays maintained that the Braves were guilty of tampering because the National League team’s interest in Cox had been leaked during the pennant stretch by the media last season, specifically the Cable News Network--owned by the Turner Broadcasting System that also controls the Braves.
