At least four ships scheduled to unload container cargo at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles departed for other ports and five others remained idle in the wake of a strike by 240 office workers, port officials said. At Long Beach, a port spokesman said the amount of cargo moving across docks has been cut in half because of the two-day strike at eight steamship and stevedoring companies. Meanwhile, no progress was reported in talks between employers and Local 63 of the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union, which represents the office workers.
