Ogygian Takes Dwyer for Third Win in Row
Ogygian, the odds-on favorite, led nearly every step of the way Saturday and won the $165,300 Dwyer Stakes for 3-year-olds at Belmont Park.
It was the third straight victory for the colt, who missed the Triple Crown races because of injury.
Johns Treasure, runner-up in the Belmont Stakes, faded to last with about a half-mile to go, then came back to finish second, 2 lengths behind Ogygian. Personal Flag was third, another head back, and one length in front of Wayar, the only other starter.
Ogygian, ridden by Walter Guerra and carrying high weight of 119 pounds, four more than all the other entries, was clocked in 1:48 2/5 for the 1 1/8 miles and paid $2.80 and $2.10.
Ogygian, a Florida-bred son of Damascus who was unbeaten in his only three starts as a 2-year-old, earned $99,180 for his sixth victory in seven starts.
