OLYMPICS WIN 13 EMMY NOMINATIONS

More than one year late, ABC’s coverage of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles has been nominated for 13 Emmy Awards for outstanding sports programming.

ABC’s presentation of the Games is in the running for best live sports special against NBC’s “The Skins Game,” a golf program, in nominations just released by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Winners will be announced Aug. 12.

The nominations cover the period between April 1, 1984, and March 31, 1985. The Emmys should have been handed out last year, but were delayed while the academy overhauled its awards procedures, a spokeswoman said.

The Summer Olympics also picked up nominations for its audio and camera work, its associate directors, its editors, its graphics designers and for specific features, such as the opening and closing ceremonies.

Overall, ABC garnered 30 of the 53 nominations, with nine going to NBC, two to CBS and 12 to syndicated programs.

In contention for the Emmy as best sports personality are Kathleen Sullivan of ABC, Curt Gowdy of ABC and George Michael of NBC.

The nominees as best edited sports special were “Jockey” and “Road to the Super Bowl ‘85,” both syndicated.

Nominated as best edited sports series were ABC’s “Wide World of Sports,” ABC’s “American Sportsman” and the syndicated “NFL Pro Magazine.”
