A light plane, apparently struck by lightning, exploded in flames while trying to land during a thunderstorm in this northern Italian city, killing all three people aboard, authorities said Monday.

Civil aviation officials reported that the twin-engine Piper, which belonged to the private Ali Genoa air-taxi company, exploded late Sunday night after a flight from the mountain town of Massa Cinquale.

Killed were the pilot, 36-year-old Giacomo Cravaro Ramella; Clelia Allegretti, a 34-year-old state prosecutor and mother of two, and Giorgio Aiazzone, 39, president of a furniture company.
