Gunman Gets All He Can Eat and Jail

A young gunman took over an Oxnard pizza parlor for three hours, ordering employees and patrons outside and helping himself to food, wine and beer before surrendering to a SWAT negotiator, police reported Tuesday.

Oxnard Police Sgt. Charles Dunham said the man walked into Palermo’s Pizza on Monday afternoon, displayed a handgun and ordered everyone to leave.

Alone in the dining room, Dunham said, the man fired three shots into the ceiling--and sat down to eat.

SWAT negotiators talked to him by telephone and bullhorn for three hours, and finally the man, identified as Leslie Hayes, 35, of Oxnard, walked out and surrendered. He was booked on suspicion of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon false imprisonment and being an ex-felon in possession of a handgun. He was held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
