Local News in Brief : Fire Burns 150 Acres by Freeways in Sylmar
A brush fire scorched 150 acres Tuesday night near the Golden State and San Diego freeways in Sylmar, creating a brilliant wall of flame visible for miles.
No homes were threatened, but at one point a Los Angeles City Fire Department helicopter crewman ordered an estimated 100 bystanders away from a ridge as flames crept within 20 feet of them. Dense smoke finally forced the Golden State Freeway to close for half an hour, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.
The fire started about 7:40 p.m. northwest of Hubbard Street and Laurel Canyon Boulevard, Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said. The fire then raced along slopes near the northbound lanes of the Golden State Freeway.
Several helicopters and about 100 Los Angeles city and county firefighters battled the blaze, which was controlled at 9:07 p.m., Wells said.
The cause is under investigation, Wells said.
