A herd of elephants rampaged through a village in eastern Assam state, killing two people and destroying crops and hundreds of houses, state forest department officials said Tuesday.
They said about 20 elephants stampeded Sunday night through the village of Kolibor, 135 miles east of the Assamese capital of Gauhati.
The elephants, attracted to paddy crops in the area, killed a man and a woman, damaged 500 dwellings and destroyed crops worth an estimated $8,000, the officials said.
