Redondo : Two Advisory Panels OKd

The city started the lengthy process of creating two new redevelopment zones this week when the City Council agreed to establish two citizen advisory committees that will study possible redevelopment areas.
After a lengthy discussion about whether the committees should consist of city residents only, the council, acting as the city’s redevelopment agency, voted to create two 20-member committees.
At the request of Mayor Barbara Doerr, the council agreed to name as many residents as possible to the panels. Doerr said she feared that non-residents with businesses or property in the city could have undue influence on the committees. The council rejected a proposal by Doerr that the city require that 75% of the members be residents.
The two areas being considered by the committees are the Artesia Boulevard-Aviation Boulevard commercial corridor, including portions of Hawthorne Boulevard and Kingsdale Avenue; and a southern commercial corridor that includes Pacific Coast Highway and Catalina Avenue from 190th Street to Pearl Street.
City Manager Timothy Casey said the committees will be appointed by Aug. 5 and will meet for about six months.
