Desert Region Hit by 2 More Aftershocks
Two more aftershocks rumbled through desert resort and retirement communities early Friday, three days after the region’s strongest earthquake in seven years caused more than $6 million damage.
An aftershock rattled the area at 12:49 a.m. Friday and a longer, rolling quake hit at 1:52 a.m., Police Sgt. Walt Madison said. He described the second aftershock as stronger than the 3.5 aftershock recorded at 5:02 a.m. Thursday., but police received no calls after Friday’s temblors and there were no reports of additional damage.
Caltech seismologist Dee Page said there had been 60 to 70 aftershocks over 3.0, and 20 over 3.5, since the 5.9 quake--which was felt throughout Southern California and as far east as Las Vegas, 185 miles away--struck the Coachella Valley early Tuesday.
The pre-dawn quake was the strongest to hit Southern California since a 6.6 jolt struck the Imperial Valley in 1979.
