U.S., S. Korea Reject North’s Talks Bid
Gen. William J. Livsey, U.S. military commander in Korea, and the South Korean defense chief rejected letters Friday from North Korean Defense Minister Oh Chin U about tripartite talks.
North Korean officials tried to deliver Oh’s letters at the truce village of Panmunjom, 35 miles north of Seoul.
The letters, addressed to Livsey and South Korean Defense Minister Lee Ki Baek, reiterated a June proposal for a tripartite military summit involving North and South Korea and the United States.
South Korea and the United States have dismissed the proposal.
The United States has said it was not constructive to propose a new forum while the Armistice Commission was a “perfectly adequate mechanism to address reduction of tension.”
