The 94th annual Orange County Fair got under way in Costa Mesa, with fair officials expecting a record turnout for the 10-day event.
The fair set a record last year with 362,907 visitors. Fair spokeswoman Jill Lloyd said that officials expect close to 400,000 people this year.
The fair’s theme is “Jump on Over,” as in the cow-jumped-over-the-moon fairy tale, as a salute to the dairy industry.
The fair’s 55 full-time and 500 part-time employees have set up displays over 160 acres. A band called Light Mooves (again, a dairy salute) will present a laser show twice nightly today through Thursday in the grandstand. Among the new exhibits is the “Rock Food Banquet,” courtesy of rock collectors Arless and Margeret Nixon of Phoenix, Ariz. It may resemble a Thanksgiving feast, but it’s actually a replica of a meal, made out of rocks that look like chicken, cheese, and salami and such.
Carnival rides run all day until midnight.
General admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 6 to 12. Children under 6 are admitted free.
