A nurse, put on the stand by attorneys for the family of the only man ever killed in a violent act at Disneyland, told an Orange County Superior Court last week that she tried to help the victim but several security guards and a park nurse ignored her repeated pleas.

Alice Sylvester, a visitor in the park, said she cared for the victim for at least 20 minutes before Disneyland officials took charge.

The lawsuit was filed by the family of Mel C. Yorba, 19, of Riverside, who was stabbed to death during a private party at the park on March 7, 1981, by James O’Driscoll, now serving a 16-year-to-life sentence after being convicted in Yorba’s death.

Sylvester, a licensed vocational nurse from San Diego, testified that “I looked around for help. Some security guards did arrive on the scene, but they didn’t come forward.

“I kept asking, ‘Where is the ambulance, where are the paramedics? This man needs help.’ ”
