Islands in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta are sinking about two to four inches a year and it might take $3.4 billion to preserve them over the next 50 years, according to a Sacramento County report that recommends supervisors restrict development in the delta area because of the danger of flooding. “The county is placed in an uncertain legal position in approving additional development with the knowledge of flooding risks involved,” the report says, referring to the possibility of flood-triggered lawsuits. The staff recommendation to restrict development has drawn criticism from some residents, who claim it will hurt the area’s economy.
