Peter Gourevitch, a political science professor and specialist in international political economies at UC San Diego, has been named dean of the university’s new Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, UCSD announced Monday.
The appointment of Gourevitch, who chaired the committees that planned the school, came after a nationwide search led by former Chancellor William J. McGill.
Gourevitch said his major duties before the school opens in September, 1987, will be to lead faculty recruitment, develop a curriculum and write admissions criteria and procedures.
“I think this is a big commitment by the state of California and an imaginative commitment,” Gourevitch said. “I’m very excited at being a part of that.”
The graduate school, the first in the nation to focus primarily on the countries ringing the Pacific Ocean, will train students for business, academic and government careers. Pacific Rim countries include nations on the west coast of South America, all of Central America, Mexico, the United States, Canada, the Soviet Union, Japan, both Koreas, China, Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand.
The school will provide training in a field deemed vital to California’s future; 82% of the state’s $80 billion in foreign trade is with Pacific Rim countries.
