Former San Francisco Examiner Editor C. David Burgin was named editor of the Dallas Times-Herald by Publisher Arthur E. Wible. Burgin, 46, succeeds Shelby Coffey III, who is joining the Los Angeles Times as deputy associate editor in September. Los Angeles-based Times Mirror, which owns The Times, announced last month that it will sell the Dallas Times-Herald to a group headed by William Dean Singleton.
Burgin, who joins the Times-Herald immediately, takes over as editor on Sept. 1, after the sale to Singleton is completed. Wible said Burgin was “a very, very competitive guy” who as editor of the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel between 1982 and 1985 “gave that paper a national reputation.”
Burgin was ousted in January as editor of the San Francisco Examiner by Publisher William Randolph Hearst III after only seven months. At the Examiner, Burgin tried to refashion the paper’s feature sections and played a key role in recruiting several columnists, “the soul of a newspaper” as he termed them, including his friend Hunter S. Thompson.
Burgin also edited the Peninsula Times-Tribune in Palo Alto and worked at the now-defunct Washington Star.
