Former Dodger pitcher Steve Howe, who failed a drug test administered by the San Jose Bees on Monday, took another test in the evening that proved to be negative. However, Howe seems resigned to retiring from baseball.

“It’s time to put down kid games and go on,” Howe said. “I’m tired of the false hopes. I’ve been ridiculed by the press and the media, but I still think I’m a pretty good person. Right now, I’m just relaxing with the family, and that’s good enough for me.”

Michele Klaich, a spokeswoman for Syntex, the lab where the first test was done, said it was possible for tests 13 hours apart to have different results if traces of a drug had left the individual’s system in the interim.
