A jury was selected Thursday in the trial of one of three man charged with murder in the Jan. 13 slaying of a Sheriff’s Department cadet in Spring Valley.

Opening statements and testimony will begin Tuesday before San Diego Superior Court Judge Barbara Gamer in the trial of Jesse Lee Stuart, 20, of San Diego.

Stuart is accused of shooting Kelly Bazer, 28, of El Cajon, in the back as she fled from him and another man shortly after a nearby grocery was robbed. Also charged are Ronnie Williams, 20, and Prentice Byrd, 19, who is believed to have been the getaway car driver. Their murder trials are to begin Aug. 18.

A judge last month ordered separate trials for each defendant because the prosecution wants to use each man’s statement against the other two.

The three also are accused of robbing a Safeway store on St. George Place.

Bazer was shot and her car was stolen after she was confronted by two men who demanded her car keys, witnesses told authorities.
