Autry Undergoes Operation on Broken Hip

Angel owner Gene Autry was in good condition Friday after surgery for a broken right hip, a team spokesman said.

The 1 1/2-hour operation at St. Joseph Hospital in Burbank, completed just after 1 p.m., went well and without complication, according to the spokesman.

Autry, who was injured in a fall Thursday, underwent a process called a right femoral hip replacement, which replaces the ball in the ball-and-socket hip joint with a metal substitute.

The 78-year-old Autry is expected to remain in the hospital 10 to 14 days and will have to undergo a rehabilitation period.
