Connecticut Gov. O’Neill Is Renominated
Gov. William A. O’Neill put down a challenge Saturday from former Rep. Toby Moffett to win the Democratic nomination and seek a second term.
Moffett fell 20 votes short of the 270 needed at the Democratic state convention to keep his candidacy alive for a statewide primary that would have been held in September.
O’Neill, who had been assured the convention’s endorsement, won the nomination outright by polling 1,098 delegates to 250 for Moffett. Under state law, Moffett needed 270 votes--20% of the total number of delegates--to force O’Neill into a nominating primary.
O’Neill, 55, will face the winner of a three-way race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, which will be decided at the state GOP convention scheduled for this weekend.
