Residents May Register for Pumpkin Contest
Residents are invited to sign up for the sixth annual Giant Pumpkin Growing Contest.
Contest chairman Ed Merrill said the pumpkins will be weighed in October at the gardens behind the City Council chambers, and pies will be made from the pumpkins.
“We have made some pretty large-sized pumpkin pies,” he said. The largest was 24 feet in diameter.
Last year’s winner, an agriculture teacher from Westminster High School, grew a 177-pound pumpkin.
Participants may sign up with the Westminster Historical Society by calling (714) 897-0550 or with the Community Services and Recreation Department at (714) 895-2860. The top three winners will receive awards of $50, $35 and $25, Merrill said.
