Thousands of people fled into the streets in panic Wednesday when an earthquake registering 4.2 on the Richter scale jolted this southern Italian city and nearby towns in the quake-prone region of Basilicata, officials said.
Italy’s Civil Defense Ministry said the temblor damaged some roofs and cornices and cracked the facades of a few old buildings in this regional capital. There were no reports of casualties.
