Juror Collapse Delays Grenada Trial Again
The foreman of the jury in the trial of 18 people accused of murdering Prime Minister Maurice Bishop collapsed in court Wednesday, once more halting proceedings in the much-delayed trial.
Doctors disagreed on the cause of the foreman’s collapse, with one saying he would not rule out a mild heart attack and another saying he smelled alcohol on the juror’s breath. The foreman replied that the smell came from an ointment he had rubbed on his body the previous day.
The 18 defendants, mostly former officials in Bishop’s government, are accused of murdering him and 10 associates on Oct. 19, 1983. The murder prompted the U.S.-led invasion that ousted the government.
