The U.S. Geological Survey backed away from its earlier advisory that a large earthquake could rock the Chalfant Valley area near Bishop after Monday’s 6.1 magnitude temblor. Government geophysicist Dave Hill said that “everybody feels the chance of another large quake is diminishing” because the aftershock sequence has behaved normally. State Office of Emergency Services spokesman Tom Mullins agreed. Residents and merchants had criticized the initial advisory as irresponsible because it could frighten away tourists.
