Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar successfully underwent a quadruple coronary bypass operation Thursday, his spokesman announced.

“The doctors are very happy with the way the operation went and they said the prognosis was excellent, that his heart is in excellent shape and, therefore, there is no problem,” Francois Giuliani told reporters after returning from Mount Sinai Medical Center, where the surgery was performed.

Giuliani said the 66-year-old U.N. secretary general will spend 10 to 14 days at the hospital. Afterward, Giuliani said, “the secretary general should lead a completely normal life.”

“He should be able to return to work within a few weeks,” the spokesman said.

Perez de Cuellar, a Peruvian, has been secretary general for nearly five years.

He was admitted to the hospital Wednesday for a cardiovascular test.
