The Citadel was “in no way at fault” for Marc Buoniconti’s paralyzing neck injury that occurred when the football player speared a downed opponent, the school said in an answer to Buoniconti’s lawsuit.
Buoniconti is solely to blame for his injury because the former linebacker’s action was “in violation of common sense, rules of safety and the rules of football,” attorneys for the military college wrote in the response to the suit.
Buoniconti, 19, is seeking unspecified damages, charging that doctors failed to diagnose his injury properly and that his coaches advised him to play while injured.
