John Henry May Return to Racing at Del Mar
John Henry, the all-time thoroughbred earnings leader, had a five-furlong workout Thursday morning at Del Mar and could be ready to race at the track before the end of its summer meeting Sept. 10, said trainer Ron McAnally.
Jockey Lewis Cenicola took John Henry, an 11-year-old gelding, through the five furlongs in 1:00 2/5.
John Henry, who has earned more than $6.5 million, has not raced since October, 1984. He suffered a minor injury and went into retirement last year, but recently returned to training.
In Thursday’s $27,000 feature race, jockey Laffit Pincay restrained Secuencia while maintaining good position and accelerated in the stretch to overtake favored Rekindling and win by a neck.
Secuencia paid $5.20, $2.40 and $2.10.
