Auto Racing Roundup : Yarborough Edges Gant at Talladega

Cale Yarborough held off Harry Gant by less than half a car length to win round 3 of the Budweiser International Race of Champions Saturday at Alabama International Motor Speedway in Talladega, Ala.

Yarborough, who came from the No. 7 starting position, took the lead for good on lap 9 of the 100.08-mile race and grabbed the lead in the 10th International Race of Champions series.

Bill Elliott took third, and Darrell Waltrip finished fourth.

Yarborough won his fifth IROC race, taking over the all-time lead in that category, and averaged 183.411 m.p.h on the 2.66-mile, high-banked tri-oval.

Pete Halsmer, in his first Trans Am victory of the season, outdueled Wally Dallenbach Jr. to win the 60-mile event at the four-mile Road America sports-car race track in Elkhart Lake, Wis.

Keke Rosberg of Finland outraced world champion Alain Prost of France to take the pole position for today’s German Grand Prix in Hockenheim, West Germany.
