MILAN, Italy — Sandro Altobelli, Italy’s top scorer in the World Cup in Mexico, said Friday that he will not play on the national soccer team any longer.
Altobelli, 29, announced his “irrevocable decision” at the headquarters of his club, Internazionale of Milan.
The center-forward, who also played on the Italian team that won the World Cup in 1982, said he was embittered by the controversies that have dogged the national team recently.
Some of Altobelli’s relatives live in Southern California. Joey Altobelli, a cousin, owns Joey’s La Brique, a popular sports bar-restaurant in Bellflower.
