President Reagan’s top advisers on space policy recommended that he wait a few months before seeking funds for a replacement of the shuttle Challenger, a senior White House official said. The official, speaking on condition he not be identified, said most of the President’s advisers appeared to share the view that the Administration should move ahead with construction of some unmanned rockets to “clear out the backlog” of satellite launches caused by the grounding of the space shuttles in the wake of the Jan. 28 Challenger disaster.
