San Diego Women’s Tennis : Anne White (No. 3 Seed) of La Jolla Upset in Round 1

Debbie Spence made Alycia Moulton the first upset victim of the $75,000 Virginia Slims women’s tennis tournament Tuesday at the San Diego Hilton Beach & Tennis Resort, then Melissa Gurney made Anne White the second victim Tuesday night.

Gurney, 17, of Palos Verdes defeated No. 3-seeded White of La Jolla, 6-4, 6-3, and Spence of Cerritos beat No. 6 Moulton of Sacramento, 6-4, 7-5. Gurney and Spence advance to today’s second round of singles play.

Also on the Stadium Court, Californians Camille Benjamin, Hu Na and Cari Hagey were not as fortunate as Spence and Gurney.

Benjamin lost to Susan Sloane of Lexington, Ky., 4-6, 6-3, 6-3; Na was defeated by Wendy White of Atlanta, 6-3, 6-3, and Hagey lost to No. 5 Betsy Nagelsen of Kapalui Bay, Hawaii, 6-4, 6-1. Lea Antonopolis and Claudia Monteiro defeated Terry Holladay and Barbara Gerken, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in the first doubles match of the day.

On Court 3, No. 4 Kate Gompert got behind early to Marianne Werdel, but came back to post a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win. Rosalyn Fairbank of South Africa defeated Silke Meier of West Germany, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6; Caroline Kuhlman downed Gerken, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0, and Beth Herr of Dayton, Ohio, beat Beverely Bowes of Lubbock, Tex., 6-3, 6-1.

On Court 4, Cynthia and Cammie MacGregor of Palos Verdes beat Elena Reinach and Amy Holton, 6-4, 6-1; Dinky VanRensburg of South Africa defeated Jenny Byrne of Australia, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3, and Elena Reinach of South Africa breezed by Laura Bernstein of Hollywood, Fla., 6-2, 6-0.
