An initiative to repeal the city utility tax has qualified for the November ballot, according to City Clerk Dorothy Outwater.

She said the county registrar-recorder’s office has verified that petitions circulated by a taxpayers group called All We Can Afford had more than the required 3,479 signatures of registered voters.

The council will have the option at its meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday of either repealing the tax or submitting the measure to voters in the Nov. 4 city election.

The 5% tax applies to electric, gas, water, telephone and cable television bills. The tax raises $2.7 million of the city’s $20-million annual budget.
