Another strong aftershock of last week’s 6.1 Chalfant Valley earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, struck Bishop early Thursday, breaking a plate-glass window in a supermarket and forcing closure for the day of a National Weather Service office after several lighting fixtures fell. Another mild temblor, the second in three days, was felt in the Culver City area. The noon quake measured only 2.8 and did no damage. The month of July saw the most seismic activity in California in the last three years, with seven earthquakes measuring more than 5.0. In Thursday’s 12:23 a.m. temblor, merchandise again fell from store shelves in both Bishop and Chalfant Valley.
