Huntington Beach : Final Plans Readied for Major Sports Complex

Share

Huntington Beach community services officials have drawn up a final master plan for the creation of a $9-million sports complex in Central Park.

The complex, which has already begun to take shape, will eventually include a natatorium--or swimming pool--gymnasium, recreation center, several ballparks, a theme playground, Frisbee golf course, a man-made lake, expansion of existing equestrian trails, a refurbished handgun shooting range and camping facilities.

Initially, the plans were to be developed by the YMCA. As of June, however, the YMCA’s extended lease on the proposed park site expired and the group had raised only $775,000 toward construction of the complex.

Instead, the YMCA will participate in the park operation as a joint venture, but the city has taken “the lead role” in development plans, according to Max Bowman, city director of community services.

Bowman said at least $3 million is needed to realize the first phase of the plan, which would include development of the aquatic center, two playing fields, the gymnasium and recreation center and its staffing.

The initial phase “could be built within the next five years,” according to a staff report.

The master plan for the park has been submitted for review to members of the City Council and will be voted on after an Aug. 18 study session.
