Boys 12 National Tennis Tournament : No. 8 Doubles Team Loses to Unseeded Pair

Jason Parker and Jasen Rollauer of Georgia, seeded eighth in doubles, became the first upset victims of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys 12 National Tennis Tournament Wednesday at Balboa Park’s Morley Field. They lost to unseeded Paul Galichia of Kansas and Ross Loel of California, 7-5, 6-4.

The top seven-seeded doubles teams advanced to today’s third round, but not as easily as the top eight seeds advanced to today’s fourth round of singles.

The top singles players outscored their opponents in games by a combined 96-28, and all eight matches were two-set victories.

Top-seeded Vincent Spadea of Boca Raton, Fla., defeated J.J. Jackson of Chapel Hill, N.C., 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 Brian Dunn of Brandon, Fla., beat Todd Dissly of San Jose, 6-0, 6-0, No. 3 Jon Gold of Tamarack, Fla., beat Brint Morrow of Delaware, 6-1, 6-3, and No. 4 Jeff Salzenstein of Inglewood, Colo., beat Adam Pessl of Bellview, Wash., 6-0, 6-2.

No. 5 Jeffrey Giraldo of Michigan, No. 6 Eddie Schwartz of Illinois, No. 7 Chris Devore of Illinois and No. 8 Damon Henkel of Florida were the other advancing seeds.

The No. 2 doubles team of Jon Goldfarb ) (Florida) and Joseph Carneley ) (Florida) almost joined Parker and Rollauer on the upset list, but came back to defeat Reed Cordish (Maryland) and David Caldwell (Virginia), 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-0). The seventh-seeded team of Devore and Schwartz also had to come back in the third set to beat Paul and Crunch Kloberdanz (Oklahoma), 6-4, 6-7, 6-0.

Today’s schedule: 10:30 a.m., fourth-round singles; noon, fourth-round singles; 3 p.m., third-round doubles.
